Have you been wanting to be more effective in your workday? Have you been growing tired of your lifeless routine? Then this post is for you!

You should not be a slave to your routine. Your routine should create freedom for you and I have created a little series that I will help you create that life-giving routine.

Today I am going to share about how to have a routine that is efficient and effective. If this is the first post you are reading in these series I've linked below to the other posts for your convince!

1. How to create your unique routine

2. How to create an efficient routine

3. How to Implement a New routine

The number one way to have an effienct and effective routine is to be disciplined.

Did you just cringe? It is okay if you did. Discipline is a scary word and a couple of years ago I would have cringed at this word too.

But discipline will be what carries us through the good times and the bad. As creative entrepreneurs we don't have the luxury of not "feeling it" if you aren't working your business is going no where. You don't have a boss and coworkers you can rely on to keep things running.

Plus, inspiration is for amateurs. Real entrepreneurs power through the slump and get work done anyway. Here are some things you can implement to be a more disciplined worker.

Set work hours and stick to them

But before you set these hours ask yourself: when are you most productive? You don't have to work 9 - 5 just because the rest of the world does. But once you set them you must stick to them. You didn't leave your 9-5 so you could work 24/7! There needs to be balance so that you don't burn out.

Eliminate distractions

Tip 1: For the love of all things good a beautiful in the world, do NOT work and watch Netflix at the same time! You are doing your clients and yourself a disservice if you are not giving your work your full attention. Just glancing over at the tv, or your phone, or your email wastes SO much time. There are lots of really smart people who have done studies about this and some of them say that it can take your brain up to a minute to readjust back to your task.

So if you glance up from your computer 30 times within a 2 hour period because Andy on Parks and Rec did something hilarious again you've essentially wasted 30 minutes.

Tip 2: Put your phone on do not disturb and put it in your desk drawer so you aren't tempted to pop onto Facebook "real quick".

A helpful app for this that I love is called Forest. You set a timer for how long you want to be off your phone. While the timer is going a tree will be growing. If you exit out of the app your tree will die!

Any time I feel the urge to pop onto my Instagram when I am not suppose to, I create a tree and put my phone a way. It works like a charm because I never want to kill my tree!

Tip 3: Close all the tabs you don't need. It is even just so easy to be distracted when you have more tabs open than you need. Let's say you are writing a blog post. All you need for this is your blog page open and the google doc that you tipped up the content in. But you also have Pinterest open. Your blog is set up and now you want to copy the content over, but instead of clicking the google doc tab you accidentally click on Pinterest and see beautiful images that would be perfect for one of your inspiration boards. Then you find yourself 30 minutes later in a pinning hole, remembering that this wasn't what you were supposed to be working on!

Only having the tabs open that you need eliminates the opportunity to be distracted by a less important task.

This also applies to email! Yes. Sitting in your inbox all day will surely drive down your productivity. It is hard to resist checking it in the middle of something when you see that little number go up.

Tip 4: When you notice something distracting you eliminate it. Simple as that.

Batch Work

When similar activities are grouped together it allows you to be more effective because you are not wasting time switching back and forth between tasks.

In my business I have whole days dedicated to specific tasks, Tuesdays are editing days, Thursdays are content creation, Fridays are bookkeeping and learning! Nothing gets neglected because everything has a specific day!

ย

I hope the step number two was helpful and that you are on your way to having a great routine that will help your business flourish! Be sure to keep your eye out for the last step coming to you soon!
