Why I Take a Lunch Break

May 20, 2016

Hustle. Be productive. Sleep when you are dead. Does this sound familiar? Here in America we are all about being busy. Even though we might not admit it, we live a lifestyle where we live to work. Work is our worth and all-consuming. But should it be?

I don’t want to live that way. I want to work so that I can live, and live well. Human worth isn’t dependent on how productive we are or how much money we make. I am more than my job and you are too. We are friends, wives, sons, daughters, mothers, neighbors and countless other things besides our career title. Yet finding that work-life balance is a struggle when work is the loudest and most persistent voice in our heads.

One daily ritual I use to combat this is a lunch break. Every day about noon, I step away from my desk, whip up a healthy meal and sit in the sun on my balcony. I do this every day for at least 40 minutes. It seems so simple but it completely changes my mindset and reminds me I am more than my job. Switching out of work mode for this little midday retreat allows me to fully engage with my life at the end of the day. This discipline helps me to set other necessary boundaries and gives me the strength to live the life I want now.

You are more than your job and you should take a lunch break too.

This is so true. I asked someone at work what they are doing for the weekend with an enthusiastic voice and their reply was preparing for next week for work. I thought to myself, what about your life! You know, everything else that exists outside of work! Thank u for this reminder! I try to get outside for my lunch breaks and I always find it rejuvenating!
