3 Reasons Why You Don’t Need to Create a Wedding Shot List

Feb 16, 2017

You’ve read about it on Pinterest and you’ve seen it on wedding blogs. The wedding shot list. I am here to tell you that it is not necessary. Yes, cross it off your checklist and never think about it again because it is a waste of your time. Here are 3 Reasons Why You Don’t Need to Create a Wedding Shot List:

1. Professionals Know What They Are Doing

A professional wedding photographer has tons of experience and will go to more weddings in one year than you will probably ever attend in your life. They know a wedding day like the back of their hand and have a workflow that is unique to them. A wedding photographer is prepared and knows exactly what photos they need to get when.

Note: this is why it is so important to choose a photographer whose style matches yours. If you like a really natural and candid style you can’t expect or ask them to shoot in a style different than their brand.

2. Your Wedding Is Unique

And is unlike any wedding you’ve seen online. Why? Because your love story is unique! Giving your photographer a long list that you crafted from Pinterest will only distract them from the wonderfully genuine moments that make your day special.

3. Work With Someone You Trust (and like)!

Let’s be real. The only reason you feel the need to give your photographer a shot list is because you don’t trust them and you’re worried they won’t capture your treasured moments. The solution to this fear isn’t to take hours and hours to create a list of images but it is to hire someone you trust and like so that you can put your mind at rest.

But Christa, I’m still feeling nervous….

I am not saying you can’t express what is important to you. I encourage you to think hard about what is important to you and to communicate that to your photographer. Just not in a list of a hundred images. Here are three ways you can and should communicate with your photographer:

Explain to them you are really hoping for mostly candids, or great pose shots for the frames you have at home! Or if you and your fiancé are playful people and want the images to reflect that let your photographer know so they can direct you accordingly!

If there are elements of your wedding day that have extra special significance, let your photographer know! Are you wearing the veil your grandma wore on her wedding day? Did you hand make all the candles with your sister? Is the officiant your brother? These are things you need to tell your photographer so they can be prepared to capture that special significance!

Have you been dreaming of a silhouetted image of you and your new spouse kissing as the sun is setting? Then you should, by all means, let your photographer know!  If you’ve had a certain composition or idea that holds a special place in your heart tell your photographer but this list should be no more than 3 or 4 suggestions.

Are you Engaged? I’d love to tell your story!
