This Anniversary Session at the San Juan Mission was the third time I have photographed David and Vika. The first was for a session in preparation for the Big Fake Wedding we all participated in. David and Vika were the Bride and Groom at the BFW San Diego in 2017 and I was one of the photographers. But true to my process, I wanted them to feel comfortable with me and in front of my camera so we made time to do a couples session before the event. That session and the images from the Big Fake Wedding were lovely, however, this session outshines them both.
In fact, it is one of my favorite sessions… of like ever.
After the sunset and we said our goodbyes I drove away on cloud nine. Then proceed to write down everything that made this session amazing to I could create the same amazingness for my other couples. It came down to four things:
I’ve been refining and narrowing down what makes a great outfit for a session and was suuuper specific. More specific than I have ever been. And it was so worth it! The colors look so flattering on them and go so well with the location. Which brings me to my next reason.
Both locations were soft and open. Which in turn allowed the focus to be brought back to the couple.
Joyful and content – Photos, where the couple is genuinely laughing and having a good time, are my specialty and super easy for me to capture. But in this shoot, I wanted to make a specific point to try to capture not just the joy that comes with love but the sweet content as well. I feel like I was able to do that and those photos give me all the feels. But that would not have been possible without the fourth and final reason.
David and Vika focused on loving one another and went all in for my prompts. I use prompts not just poses to evoke emotion and document love genuinely. But this only works, if the couple is into it. And they were. They laughed and even cried. And I was in heaven capturing it all.
Sweet David and Vika you two are amazing. I hope you love these images as much as I do.
